A Bit of Me(Me) ~ Don’t Bogart the Vodka

by Gwen

It is time once again, to step out from behind the book and get to know one another better.

We all have a story and a life beyond the book and thanks to Danielle from There’s A Book, we get share. She asks the questions and we get to answer.

This week’s question- If you could take a class for anything (for free) what would it be?

Я всегда хотел изучать русский язык. Translation- I have always wanted to learn Russian.

Maybe it is because I am grew up in the Reagan Era, you know, “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

It might be my love, make that former love of Vodka.

It could definitely be my love-hate relationship with Russian Literature.

It probably has a bit to do with the architecture…

It might just be the cool Cyrillic alphabet.

Whatever the motivation, I have always wanted to learn Russian. The problem is and trust me it never failed, whenever I would transfer to a college that offered classes in Russian….They would stop offering them the semester/quarter that I started.

I swear, there is a vast conspiracy out there. Huge groups of people got together every year and decided to ruin my lifelong dream. It isn’t right. Oh well, someday.

A Bit About Me(Me)~ In Which One of the Adjectives Attacks Me

by Gwen

It is time once again, to step out from behind the book and get to know one another better.

We all have a story and a life beyond the book and thanks to Danielle from There’s A Book, we get share. She asks the questions and we get to answer.

This weeks question- What are three adjectives to describe you?

I hemmed and hawed about this one all week. If I say that I am “X” will they think that I am stuck up, crazy, boring? If I say “Y” do they know that I mean it this way and not that way?

That little back and forth went on all week and then it hit me. I was being attacked by possibly the worst adjective that I have on my little plate of a brain-OVER ANALYSING EVERYTHING.

crazed

This is me on a daily basis. Should I go to buy Diet Coke now, or should I wait until I know what we are making for dinner. (in case we need something else from the store)

But I need Diet Coke now, I go crazy without Diet Coke. I wonder if Coffee would work?

Coming up with that adjective was so emotionally draining that I had to call in for help on the other 2.

ME: Art, name three adjectives that you would use to describe me.

Art: Silence.  Pensive        Silence.

ME: It shouldn’t be that hard for you. If it is negative, I can take it.

Art: Creative? and you just made one of those faces at me, you are also animated.

So there you have it, I over-analyze everything, I am creative and my boyfriend says that I am animated.  I am choosing to define the word animated as lively, outgoing and vigorous as opposed to some sort of cartoon character. I guess you could call me expressive and it would get rid of all of the visions of the Coyote scrapping with the Road Runner in your head.

On the other hand, it is sort of cool being compared to Wile E. Coyote…..Genius

A Bit of Me(Me) ~Let’s Get this Party Started

It is time once again, to step out from behind the book and get to know one another better.

We all have a story and a life beyond the book and thanks to Danielle from There’s A Book, we get share. She asks the questions and we get to answer.

This Week’s Question: Which songs make your foot tap?

It would be easier to ask me what type of music doesn’t get me up and grooving. My music collection is much larger than my book collection and most would call it eclectic.

My top ten most played on my iPod right now-

Misery by Maroon 5

Tempted by Squeeze

Get Freaky by Missy Elliot

How Deep is the Ocean Diana Krall Version

Monday Monday by The Mamas and the Papas

Self Esteem by The Offspring

Feeling Good Michael Buble Version

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana

These Are The Days by Jamie Cullum

At Last by Etta James

That is it folks, those are the top ten songs right now on my iPod and they do more than get my foot tapping. The motivate me, give me exercise, and make me jump up out of my seat and sing!

A Bit About Me(Me) ~ Where Do I Start?

by Gwen

It is time once again, to step out from behind the book and get to know one another better.

We all have a story and a life beyond the book and thanks to Danielle from There’s A Book, we get share. She asks the questions and we get to answer.

Do you have a job you just couldn’t stand or possibly one that you were completely embarrassed by (ie. funny costume, etc.)?

Decisions, decisions…..do I take the easy way out or do I dig deep and go for more depth?

Horrible Job

Let’s see, there was the time that I started a job in the toy department at Target on Black Friday. Black Friday would be a bad day to start any job in retail, but in the toy department? Throw in that I am not really a kid person and it made for the longest 4 hours of my life. I clocked out and never went back.

Mortifying Job

Then there was the time that I decided to try telemarketing. Going in, I knew this probably wasn’t going to be the gig for me. Seriously, I HATE being on the phone. I think that Caller ID was made for people like me. If it is my mom, I have to answer it because if I don’t, she gets all crazy and thinks that I have run of to desert to join a cult or something. Everyone else? They usually get voice mail.

Where was I? Telemarketing. It could have been a really profitable job. I just had to call people and talk them into setting an appointment to hear about a super snazzy water filter setup. How hard could that be? Everyone drinks water, right?

They gave me a list of people to call. Where they got this list, I had no freaking clue, but after a few calls, I had a good idea. I start calling and asking for Mr. So and So or Mrs. XYZ…….BIG PROBLEMO These people were, ummmmm, dead. Before I knew it, I was commiserating with widows and widowers. I was crying, the people on the phone with cloudy water that I was supposed to be selling clean water to were crying. It was horrible. I was a telemarketing grief counselor. I lasted about 2 hours, 1 hour of that was training.

Humiliating Job

Being the low man on the totem pole is never a good thing. When you are new to a job you get all of the crappy tasks that no one that knows better wants to do. You have no pull and you have to look eager. You are there to impress so you will do anything.

Let me introduce you to the wonderful idea of “Kids Nite” at a restaurant. It didn’t matter that I was hired as a server, I was the new kid. I got stuck with the most hated role I have ever played in my life. The poor schumck that has to don a costume and stand on the corner enticing every yahoo that drives by to come and eat.

I give you my costume

ALF

Do I need to say more?

A Bit About Me(Me) ~ I Dodge the Question

by Gwen

abitofmeone

It is time once again, to step out from behind the book and get to know one another better.

We all have a story and a life beyond the book and thanks to Danielle from There’s A Book, we get share. She asks the questions and we get to answer.

Who is a famous person (dead or alive) that you most admire? And why?

I am struggling with this question. First off, what does admire really mean?

ad·mire (d-mr)

v. ad·mired, ad·mir·ing, ad·mires

1. To regard with pleasure, wonder, and approval.

2. To have a high opinion of; esteem or respect.

3. Chiefly New England & Upper Southern U.S. To enjoy (something): “I just admire to get letters, but I don’t admire to answer them” (Dialect Notes).

4. Archaic To marvel or wonder at.

See, in my house, we use admire, as in “I admire you.” because we are too chicken to say that we love each other. Really long story could be inserted here, but we don’t have all night and it is a wee bit personal.

So If I go back to the real definition of admire; I am looking for someone that I approve of and fills me with wonder.

Well, there’s a might big whopper of a problem right there. Just about everyone and everything fills me with wonder. For example, the people that drive 50 MPH on the highway where the speed limit is 65 MPH. Those drivers fill me with tons of wonder…and a few expletives tend to come out of my mouth to take part in the wonder.

So I was at a loss to pick just one person that I admire. Then I realized that it doesn’t just have to be one person. After all, there aren’t any hard and fast rules to these posts. It’s my post and I can do what I want to, do what I want to…..sing it!

You know the people that amaze me? It is all of you that are reading this post! I have diddled in all sorts of different groups of people on these grand interwebs and book bloggers rock, let me tell you.

Sure, we have the occasional blow ups over  who gets ARCs and who doesn’t, then there are the book blogger police that like to tell you what to do. Those squabbles are quickly put to rest around here with very few feathers ruffled.

That is special because it doesn’t happen on my relationship or home decorating blogs or on other non blog sites. Those dustups can get nasty and the bad juju can last for months.

We also embrace new people into what we do, we involve all, and we work at doing things as a team.

So I admire ya’ll. Give yourselves a group hug!
