Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Sphere, etc, may have passed away, but he left us an unpublished work to remember him by. Pirate Latitudes was discovered on one of his computers after his death, completely finished, and will be released on November 24th.
The setting? The Caribbean. The time? 1665. The treasure? A Spanish galleon in the heavily fortified bay of Mantanceros. Don’t laugh, it was actually a great escape!
Once you accept that you are actually reading a bit of historical fiction that happens to include pirates, it is great fun. Side note: They actually like to be called privateers. Piracy and pirates are illegal, privateering is legal and accepted.
The characters are fully developed and crystal clear. You can’t help it cheer for the bad guys, even when they aren’t the bad guys anymore. Crichton was always known for his suspenseful action and this didn’t disappoint me.
Bonus:This book is one of the weapons in the retail “book wars” so you can snatch up a copy for as little as $9.00!
