Midnight Fugue: A Dalziel and Pascoe Mystery

Superintendent Dalziel is ready to get back to work after recuperating from nearly being blown to bits by a terrorist bomb in his last case. His collogues aren’t so sure, but what he says, pretty much goes. He wonders about his readiness himself when he leaves his house to go to a meeting that isn’t taking place until the next day. It works out alright though because he manages to meet up with a damsel in distress to perk him right out of his mood.

Gina Wolfe lost her husband 7 years ago. Well, he didn’t die, he just disappeared one day and no one has seen him since. She assumed he was dead & has moved on with her life, but just before the deadline for her to go to court and have him declared legally dead, she receives a picture in the mail of him.

The more Dalziel hears of her story, the more he wonders just what this Alex Wolfe, a former D. I., had gotten himself into. He is sure the case will be simple enough though and just what he needs to get back into the swing of things at work.

The problem is, nothing is ever simple and when an officer is found unconscious and next to a very dead body after falling up a lead that Dalziel sent her on, everything changes. Now, we are looking for a murderer and someone that seriously injured a cop.
The other nagging problem is that someone has bugged their room and seems to be following them while they chase other leads. Who are they??

The book is called Midnight Fugue because the entire tale takes place in 24 hours. It was fast passed, but never hurried and very easy to keep up with. A good British Mystery with a smart but sometimes dyspeptic Superintendent at the helm.

I enjoy British mysteries. I like the change of environment, seeing how other police forces work, and the humor is as dry as a white wine, just like I like it. If you have never tried one, this would be a good place to start.
